Metabolic conditions develop gradually. Insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and fatty liver disease progress silently over many years, driven by cumulative changes in blood sugar regulation, fat distribution, and lipid balance.

By the age of forty, these processes often begin to show measurable impact. This is a key window where early detection can still influence long-term outcomes. Identifying issues at this stage allows for intervention before structural damage becomes harder to reverse.

What HbA1c Measures

HbA1c reflects average blood sugar levels over the previous two to three months. It measures how much glucose has attached to red blood cells, providing a longer-term view of metabolic function.

Why HbA1c Is a Key Screening Tool

A single glucose test captures one moment. HbA1c shows consistent patterns over time. It provides a reliable indicator of how effectively the body regulates blood sugar.

This marker cannot be influenced by short-term changes before testing, which makes it a dependable measure in clinical practice.

HbA1c Ranges and What They Mean

An HbA1c between 42 and 47 millimoles per mole indicates pre-diabetes. This stage signals increased strain on blood sugar regulation and presents an opportunity for intervention.

Levels above 48 millimoles per mole meet the threshold for type 2 diabetes. Earlier detection allows for timely action and improved outcomes.

Fasting Glucose Test and Early Diabetes Detection

Understanding Fasting Glucose Results

Fasting glucose measures blood sugar after a period without food. It provides immediate insight into how the body handles glucose at a specific point in time.

A fasting glucose level above 7 millimoles per litre can indicate type 2 diabetes. This single result can provide a clear diagnostic signal.

The range between 6.0 and 6.9 millimoles per litre is known as impaired fasting glycaemia. This stage reflects increased risk and often precedes diabetes.

A full lipid profile includes LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These components provide a detailed picture of how fats are transported and processed in the body.

Lp(a) levels remain stable throughout life and are not significantly influenced by lifestyle factors. Elevated levels increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and aortic valve disease.

Men with a family history of early cardiovascular disease should include Lp(a) in their screening. This marker can explain elevated risk even when other lipid values appear normal.
